US and Iran Pause Attacks, Resume Diplomatic Talks

After nearly two weeks of devastating military exchanges, the United States and Iran are finally talking instead of fighting.

Both nations ceased strikes on Saturday, marking the first pause in 13 days of attacks that targeted military and civilian infrastructure. The US suspended its operations on Tehran, while Iran stopped retaliatory strikes on American allies including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.

US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz announced that President Trump decided to give diplomatic negotiations another chance. "He's giving talks some space; he's giving it a little bit of room," Waltz told Fox News on Sunday.

Iran's army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia confirmed his country would match America's restraint. "Since our strategy has essentially been retaliatory, we have also halted our retaliatory operations," he said.

An Iranian official reinforced the message: if attacks stop, Iran stops too. That position has already been communicated to Washington.

The conflict centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that became the flashpoint in February. The countries had briefly resolved their dispute and reopened the strait in June, but Iranian attacks on tankers in early July reignited hostilities.

The Bright Side

Despite the cautious tone from both sides, the pause itself represents real progress. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei revealed that officials held several rounds of talks Friday and Saturday specifically about managing the waterway.

These discussions happened even as bombs were still falling, showing both nations' genuine interest in finding a peaceful solution. The fact that military operations stopped immediately after talks intensified suggests diplomacy can still work.

Ambassador Waltz noted that President Trump is "keeping all options on the table," which means the path forward remains uncertain. However, choosing conversation over continued conflict is always the harder, braver choice.
