US Clean Energy Jumps 80 GW While Fossil Fuels Shrink
America's renewable energy capacity is set to explode by more than 80 gigawatts in the next year while fossil fuels decline, marking a historic shift in how the nation powers itself. Solar and wind are now outpacing traditional energy sources at unprecedented rates.
The United States is about to experience its biggest clean energy growth spurt ever, with solar, wind, and battery storage adding over 80 gigawatts of new capacity by early 2027.
That's enough power to light up roughly 80 million homes. Meanwhile, fossil fuel capacity will drop by nearly 5 gigawatts, according to new data from the US Energy Information Administration.
Solar is leading the charge with over 42,000 megawatts of new capacity coming online. This will push solar from 12.7% of America's total power capacity to 15.5% in just one year. Wind energy is adding another 14,500 megawatts, including more than 4,000 megawatts of new offshore wind turbines spinning along US coasts.
The numbers tell an even bigger story when you zoom out. Renewable energy sources will grow by 57,000 megawatts this year, which is 75% more growth than last year. That acceleration shows clean energy isn't just growing, it's speeding up.
Renewables now make up 33.4% of all US utility scale power capacity. By early 2027, that number will hit 36.6%. When you include rooftop solar panels on homes and businesses, renewables could reach nearly 40% of America's total capacity.

Battery storage is another bright spot in the data. Utility scale batteries will surge 51% this year, jumping from 44,600 megawatts to 67,500 megawatts. These massive batteries store excess solar and wind power for use when the sun sets or wind dies down, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.
The shift is already showing up in actual electricity production. During January and February 2026, renewables increased their output by 10.8% and provided 26% of all US electricity. Solar power surged 23%, while hydropower jumped nearly 23% thanks to strong water flows.
The Ripple Effect
This clean energy boom means cleaner air for millions of Americans living near coal plants and gas facilities. It also means more stable electricity prices, since sunshine and wind are free while fossil fuel costs fluctuate wildly.
The growth is creating thousands of jobs in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance across the country. Communities that invest in solar farms and wind projects are seeing new tax revenue that funds schools and infrastructure.
Perhaps most importantly, this rapid transition happened despite political headwinds. The momentum behind renewable energy now comes from economics and consumer demand as much as policy support.
America's energy transformation is accelerating, powered by the simple fact that clean energy is becoming the smart choice for utilities, businesses, and families alike.
