US Freediver Ties World Record With 348-Foot Dive

Enchante Gallardo just showed the world how far humans can push themselves with nothing but determination and one deep breath.

The American freediver tied the women's world record in Free Immersion diving this month at the Asian Freediving Cup in Panglao, Philippines. She descended 348 feet below the surface without fins or propulsion, pulling herself down a rope using only her arms.

Gallardo matched Ukrainian diver Nataliia Zharkova's record set just two months earlier in Egypt. The dive earned her the gold medal and capped off an incredible week where she'd already broken her own personal best with a 341-foot dive days before.

Free Immersion diving tests both physical strength and mental calm. Divers must equalize the pressure in their ears while managing oxygen, all while swimming deeper than a 30-story building is tall.

"Halfway through the dive, I realized equalization was going well," Gallardo said after surfacing. "I felt really relaxed, and I felt good about the descent. So I knew I was gonna make it to the bottom, and that's definitely half the battle."

But reaching the bottom wasn't enough. Divers must also complete a strict surface protocol to prove they're alert and in control. One mistake can disqualify even a perfect dive.
