US Men, Canada Women Win Flag Football World Titles

Teams from three countries hugged, cried, and celebrated together in Düsseldorf, Germany on Sunday as flag football took a giant leap toward its Olympic future.

The United States men's team defended their world championship title with a commanding 46-26 victory over Italy. It marks their sixth straight world title and secures their spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football makes its debut.

"Gold is the only standard," said quarterback Nico Casares after throwing two touchdown passes. "That's our motto."

The women's final delivered the tournament's biggest upset. Canada defeated the defending champions from the United States 27-20, claiming their first world title since 2014.

The game stayed tied at halftime before Canada's quarterback Sara Parker connected with Frederique Morneau early in the second half. The United States fought until the final seconds but couldn't convert on fourth down with just three seconds remaining.

"I feel so happy, I can't believe it," Parker said while hugging her mother. "Literally the best day ever."

Flag football joined the Olympic program in 2023 as one of five new sports. The game features five players per side, two 20-minute halves, and zero tackling. Speed and quick thinking replace physical contact.

The NFL announced plans to launch professional flag football leagues for both men and women before the 2028 Games. With five nations now guaranteed spots in Los Angeles, the sport continues building momentum toward its Olympic moment.
