US Ski Jumper Hit by Leaf Blower, Completes Jump Anyway

When US ski jumper Ben Loomis started his run at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, he didn't expect to dodge equipment on the way down.

The 27-year-old athlete was barreling down the track for his Nordic combined team sprint jump when he collided with a leaf blower being operated by a worker on the sidelines. Heavy snowfall had required multiple workers to clear the track, but one wasn't watching as Loomis approached.

"I've never experienced anything like this," Loomis told reporters after the incident. Most athletes would have been rattled, but Loomis made a split-second decision to push forward.

The collision happened at the top of the run, giving Loomis precious moments to refocus. He convinced himself to complete the jump properly, landing an impressive 116 meters despite the unexpected obstacle.

The outcome could have been much worse. "If it had hit me in the face, it would have been a completely different story," Loomis reflected.

The Bright Side

Olympic officials immediately apologized to Loomis and the US team. Competition director Lasse Ottesen acknowledged the mistake while praising the outcome: "It was good that nothing more happened, but it should not happen."

Loomis showed remarkable sportsmanship by declining to redo his jump. He accepted the apology and moved forward, embodying the Olympic spirit of grace under pressure.

While Loomis and teammate Niklas Malacinski finished seventh in the team event, the US continued its strong performance at the games. Team USA accumulated 26 medals in Milan, including eight golds, with the women's ice hockey team claiming gold in a thrilling overtime victory against Canada.

Loomis turned a moment that could have ended in injury or disqualification into a testament to athletic focus and determination.
