U.S. Solar and Battery Production Hits Record Highs in 2025

The United States just hit a milestone that seemed impossible a few years ago: we're now making enough solar panels and batteries right here at home to power our clean energy future.

Sixty new factories opened their doors in 2025 alone, split evenly between solar panel production and battery manufacturing. Nearly all of this capacity sprang up since 2022, when new federal subsidies made it attractive for companies to build on American soil.

The numbers tell an incredible story. We can now produce twice as many solar panels as we need domestically. Our battery production capacity can meet average demand all the way through 2030.

"The policy definitely laid the right foundation for a lot of this investment to take place," said John Hensley from the American Clean Power Association. His group tracks the explosive growth happening across the country.

This manufacturing renaissance started with the simplest part of the process: final assembly. Companies found it easiest to set up facilities that put the last pieces together, even if many components still came from overseas.

But something fascinating happened next. Once those assembly plants opened, they created demand for the parts they needed. Solar cell manufacturers started building nearby to supply the assembly lines with fresh cells.

Three solar cell factories have opened over the past three years, one per year. Seven new battery cell factories are expected to finish construction by the end of this year, producing more than enough to meet our annual needs.

The momentum is real. When you build downstream factories, the upstream suppliers follow the market. It's like planting a tree that grows roots in every direction.

The Bright Side

This manufacturing boom means thousands of new jobs in communities across America. Factory workers, engineers, technicians, and support staff are building careers in clean energy.

It also means energy independence. Every solar panel and battery we make here is one we don't need to import. That keeps money circulating in local economies and strengthens our energy security.

The technology itself keeps improving too. As more facilities come online, they're learning from each other and getting better at every step of the production process.

Some challenges remain, particularly in producing the raw materials that go into cells and panels. But the foundation is solid. We've proven we can manufacture clean energy technology at scale.
