Modern solar cell manufacturing facility with production lines in Greenwood, South Carolina

US Solar Maker Triples Factory Output Ahead of Schedule

A South Carolina solar cell manufacturer just tripled its production capacity in record time, helping America build its own clean energy supply chain. ES Foundry's expansion means more affordable solar panels made right here at home.

A solar cell factory in South Carolina just proved American manufacturing can move fast when it counts.

ES Foundry completed a massive expansion of its Greenwood facility this month, tripling its production capacity from 1 GW to 3 GW. The company delivered the project on time and has already produced its first solar cell from the new production line.

The speed is remarkable. ES Foundry opened the Greenwood plant in January 2025 and reached full 1 GW capacity by year's end. When they announced plans to add 2 GW more capacity in December, they estimated completion by July. They hit that target right on schedule.

"The U.S. solar market does not need more announcements. It needs operating capacity, proven production and domestic suppliers that can support customers now," said CEO Alex Zhu.

The timing couldn't be better. America currently has just 3 GW of operational solar cell manufacturing capacity total, meaning ES Foundry alone just doubled the national supply. Meanwhile, the country has 45 GW of solar panel assembly capacity, forcing most manufacturers to import cells from overseas.

That import dependence costs companies money and creates vulnerability. Imported cells make it harder for solar panels to qualify for bonus tax credits because they contain less domestic content. New tariffs expected later this year could add 10 cents per watt to imported cell costs, potentially erasing any price advantage over American-made products.

ES Foundry chose to manufacture PERC solar cells, a proven technology that's reliable and free from the patent disputes currently tangling up newer cell designs. While not cutting edge, the approach lets them deliver consistent quality without legal headaches.

The Ripple Effect spreads beyond one factory. Wood Mackenzie analysts project U.S. solar cell capacity will surge to 20.5 GW by the end of 2027 as more companies invest in domestic production. Suniva plans to expand from 1 GW to 5.5 GW in South Carolina by mid-2027, while Qcells manufactures cells at its Georgia plant.

ES Foundry has already signed multiple supply agreements with domestic solar panel makers hungry for American-made cells. The new expansion positions them to meet surging demand from companies racing to maximize domestic content in their products.

Building a complete solar supply chain on American soil means more stable pricing, more jobs, and more energy independence as the country transitions to clean power.
