U.S. Under-17 Hockey Team Wins Tournament After 3-0 Comeback

When the U.S. Under-17 hockey team found themselves down 3-0 against Czechia in the championship game, most teams would have started planning their runner-up speeches. These kids had other plans.

The young American squad clawed back from a three-goal hole to defeat Czechia 5-4 in a shootout on Tuesday, capturing the Under-17 Four Nations Tournament championship in Chomutov, Czechia. It was the team's 10th all-time title and their third since 2021.

Czechia came out firing, building a 3-0 lead before Jack Riehl from Mars, Pennsylvania got the U.S. on the board at 12:50 of the first period. Parker Colmer and Benjamin Slavick followed with goals to tie the game, showing the kind of grit that separates good teams from great ones.

The Czechs regained the lead in the second period, but Soren Saumweber wasn't done. The Roseville, Minnesota native tied things up again in the third period with a backhand shot that sent the game to overtime.

When five minutes of overtime couldn't settle it, the game went to a shootout. That's where goalie Chase Pastor from Burlington Township, New Jersey became the hero, stopping all three Czech attempts while his teammates Aiden Kelly, Dylan Delgado, and Levi Ellingsen all found the net.

Coach Guy Gosselin summed it up perfectly after the game: "This team is resilient; they stuck with it the whole game." These aren't professional athletes with multi-million dollar contracts. They're teenagers representing their country, learning lessons about perseverance that will stick with them far beyond the ice.

The victory capped off a perfect tournament run for Team USA, who finished undefeated with a 4-0 record that included two shootout wins. That kind of clutch performance under pressure speaks to something deeper than hockey skills.
