USC Sprinter Wins 200m Title in Comeback from Injury

After missing most of the NCAA season with an injury, USC sprinter Garrett Kaalund proved patience pays off by winning the men's 200m national championship in his first complete race back.

Kaalund crossed the finish line in 20.04 seconds at New York's Icahn Stadium, claiming his first USATF outdoor title. Fellow Trojan Max Thomas grabbed bronze in the same race with a time of 20.29, making it a double celebration for USC.

The wins kept coming for the Trojan family. USC alum Anna Cockrell dominated the women's 400m hurdles from start to finish, securing her first national gold medal in 52.94 seconds. Recent graduate Christine Mallard competed in her first-ever USATF final, finishing ninth in the women's 200m.

Seven USC alumni finished in the top eight of their events during the four-day championship. Johnny Brackins set a new personal best of 13.26 in the men's 110m hurdles, good for fifth place. Allie Jones scored 5,745 points to finish seventh in the heptathlon, while Johnnie Blockburger reached the top eight in the men's 400m.
