Used Electric SUVs Now Under $25K as Sales Hit Record

Feel Good

Electric SUVs that cost $50,000 new are now selling for under $25,000 used, making clean transportation affordable for millions more families. Sales jumped to record highs last month as returning lease vehicles flooded the market with low-mileage options.

Electric SUVs are suddenly within reach for budget-conscious families, with popular models now selling for less than half their original price.

Used electric vehicle sales hit a record 3.3% of all used car sales last month, up from 2.9% in August. Meanwhile, traditional gas-powered vehicle sales dropped 4.4% as buyers discovered they could afford electric for the first time.

The timing couldn't be better. Thousands of electric vehicles are returning from three-year leases right as gas prices climb, creating a perfect opportunity for shoppers. Low-mileage 2021 to 2023 models are sitting on lots with price tags that would have seemed impossible just two years ago.

The Chevy Equinox EV leads the pack with 319 miles of range and enough space for a family road trip. It became one of America's top-selling EVs outside Tesla after launching in 2024, and earlier models are already hitting the used market at accessible prices.

Ford's Mustang Mach-E, on sale since 2021, offers 320 miles of range with the extended battery. The Premium trim includes heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a massive 15.5-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Hyundai's IONIQ 5 continues winning buyers with bold styling and ultra-fast charging capabilities. Used 2022 to 2024 models with low miles are plentiful, and upgrading from the base model adds 80 extra miles of range for a total of 303 miles.

Volkswagen's ID.4 rounds out the options with up to 275 miles of range in 2023 models. The Pro S trim added a panoramic roof and upgraded materials when VW refreshed the design that year.

The Ripple Effect

This shift matters beyond individual car buyers. More affordable electric vehicles mean cleaner air in communities where families couldn't previously afford the technology. Every used EV purchased keeps another gas-powered vehicle off the road while making zero-emission transportation normal rather than luxury.

The growing used market also proves electric vehicles hold their value while remaining reliable. Buyers who were skeptical about battery life or maintenance costs can now see three-year-old EVs performing strong with thousands of trouble-free miles already logged.

Lower prices remove the biggest barrier to electric adoption. Families who dismissed EVs as too expensive are discovering monthly fuel savings that make the total cost of ownership lower than gas vehicles, even before considering reduced maintenance.

The flood of inventory means buyers have real choices and negotiating power for the first time in the electric market.

This isn't a temporary blip but the beginning of a sustained trend as more leases expire and electric vehicles become America's mainstream transportation choice.
