Used EVs Selling 71% Higher Than Gas Cars in Australia

Mind Blown

Electric vehicles are crushing resale value predictions, with damaged EVs sparking bidding wars and selling for up to 71% more than comparable gas cars. Rising fuel costs and batteries lasting far longer than expected are making secondhand EVs the smart money choice.

When 40 concrete-splattered electric vehicles hit the auction block in Australia this March, nobody expected a frenzy. Thousands of bidders flooded in, driving prices to levels that left auctioneers stunned.

The reason? Soaring fuel prices combined with a revelation that's flipping the used car market upside down: EV batteries are lasting way longer than anyone predicted.

Pickles Auctions has tested over 2,750 used EV batteries and found something remarkable. Five-year-old electric vehicles still retain 93% of their battery capacity. Even former rideshare cars with over 230,000 kilometers on them are running at 89%.

Those numbers matter because they destroy the old warning that EVs would become worthless after a decade. Instead, salvage electric vehicles are now fetching 16% higher auction prices than gas equivalents for spare parts alone.

Repairable damaged EVs command an even bigger premium at 71% higher than similar petrol cars. The secondhand market has completely reversed expectations.

Rob Chan manages Turo Australia, a car rental marketplace where EV bookings are growing 28 times faster than gas and diesel. Hosts who list their vehicles are scrambling to buy used electric cars because customer demand keeps climbing.

The shift isn't happening in wealthy eco-conscious neighborhoods either. Some of the highest EV adoption rates are in outer suburbs like Tarneit, 30 kilometers west of Melbourne, where commuters face long drives and tight budgets.

"For most buyers, it is no longer a climate issue, it is very much a cost-of-living issue," says Aman Gaur from the Electric Vehicle Council. Lower running costs are winning over families who need to stretch every dollar.

The Bright Side

This story represents something bigger than just good deals on cars. It shows how environmental solutions can become mainstream when they solve everyday problems people actually face.

Battery repair specialist Andrew Chadwick puts it simply: electric vehicles have fewer parts that can break. That reliability translates to higher long-term value, whether you care about the planet or just your wallet.

Even older batteries running at 60% capacity hold value for people making short trips around town. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old gas car becomes scrap metal.

The transition still needs work, with charging infrastructure struggling to keep pace with demand. Australia's battery recycling industry is also in early stages.

But the message from auction houses, rental platforms, and secondhand buyers is clear: the days of electric vehicles as risky investments are over.
