Utah Offers $6K Per Job to Boost Rural Towns

Rural Utah towns are getting a major boost as the state opens applications for grants that pay businesses to create jobs where they're needed most.

The Rural Employment Development Incentive (REDI) program offers businesses up to $6,000 for each new full-time position they create in rural areas. Applications opened this week and will run quarterly, giving companies multiple chances throughout the year to apply.

The program targets communities often overlooked by economic development. Qualifying locations include rural counties and towns with populations under 10,000 in Weber, Davis, and Utah Counties, plus most of Washington County outside St. George.

But this isn't just about creating any jobs. The state set the bar high to ensure these positions truly help families thrive. New roles must pay at least 100% of the county's average wage and last for a full year, guaranteeing stability for workers who take them.

State officials designed the program with smart guardrails. Businesses in construction, retail, staffing, and public utilities don't qualify, focusing the grants on industries that typically bring sustainable growth. A single company can receive up to $250,000 annually, opening doors for both small startups and larger employers to invest in rural communities.
