Van Halen Drummer Honored with Dutch Knighthood at 73

Alex van Halen traveled thousands of miles to accept a knighthood in the city where his legendary music journey began. The 73-year-old drummer, who co-founded the iconic rock band Van Halen with his late brother Eddie, received the Order of the Netherlands Lion from Nijmegen's mayor Hubert Bruls.

The honor recognizes Van Halen's distinctive drumming style that helped define rock music for generations. His hometown cited his "powerful, dynamic and precise" technique that propelled hits like "Jump" and "Runnin' with the Devil" to global fame.

Van Halen's path from Nijmegen to rock stardom began in 1962 when his family moved to Pasadena, California. He was just a young boy, but eight years later, he and younger brother Eddie would launch a band that changed music forever.

The brothers started as classically trained pianists and even swapped instruments before finding their perfect roles. Originally Eddie wanted drums while Alex played guitar, but they switched by the time they formed their first school band, The Broken Combs.

At the ceremony, Van Halen expressed his gratitude while displaying his characteristic humility. "I think institutions like this are important in people's lives because it adds a dignity and a gravity to what we do," he said after signing the city's official book.

Van Halen's recognition goes beyond personal achievement. It celebrates how two Dutch immigrants transformed American rock music while never forgetting their roots.

The city already honored the brothers in 2019 by temporarily renaming part of Hunnerpark to Van Halenplein and painting a mural for Eddie. The band stayed together until Eddie's death in 2020 at age 65, cementing a brotherhood that lasted both on and off stage.
