Venezuela Wins First World Baseball Classic Crown

A nation found its reason to celebrate Tuesday night when Venezuela's baseball team defeated the United States 3-2 to win the World Baseball Classic for the first time in history.

Eugenio Suarez drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning at Miami's LoanDepot Park, completing an improbable comeback against an American lineup packed with superstar talent. The victory sent 36,190 fans into a frenzy and sparked street celebrations across Venezuela.

The South American squad dominated much of the game behind stellar pitching from Eduardo Rodriguez, who silenced big-name American batters including Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. Venezuela built a 2-0 lead through five innings, with Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu crushing a 414-foot home run in the fifth.

Just when victory seemed certain, Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper launched a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning. But Venezuela refused to fold under pressure.

In the ninth, Luis Arraez drew a walk before Suarez delivered his championship-winning double to left center field. Closer Daniel Palencia sealed the deal by retiring three straight batters.

"Nobody believed in Venezuela, but now we win the championship today," Suarez said after the game. "This is a celebration for all the Venezuelan country."
