Veterans Cook 100 Meals for Ohio First Responders
When rain canceled their Memorial Day picnic, Washington County veterans pivoted to honor those working the holiday instead. Three veteran organizations teamed up to prepare and hand-deliver hot meals to every fire and police department in the area.
When rain washed out their annual Memorial Day picnic, veterans in Washington County, Ohio didn't let the day go to waste. Instead, they channeled their energy into feeding the first responders who had to work while others celebrated.
Representatives from the Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, and Marietta Elks Lodge gathered Monday morning with a new mission. They would prepare fresh meals for over 100 firefighters and police officers staffing departments across the county.
"What better way than to feed the people who have to work on this day and don't get to enjoy it like we do?" said David Brown, Washington County DAV Officer. The group started cooking at 8 a.m., with volunteer Doug Brown leading the kitchen crew.
The menu featured grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, smoked chicken, potato salad, and banana pudding for dessert. But the logistics required careful planning beyond just cooking.
Brown's team called each fire and police department ahead of time to get exact headcounts. They assembled delivery teams to ensure meals arrived hot and fresh to every location.

"We've got so many people helping that it's not even stressful," Brown said. "You know the phrase, 'many hands make light work.'"
The Ripple Effect
What started as a canceled picnic became something more meaningful. The veterans spent their afternoon not just dropping off meals but spending time with the first responders on duty.
The gesture connected two groups who share a common thread: people who chose careers serving others. While the veterans had originally planned to celebrate among themselves, pivoting to honor working first responders gave the holiday deeper purpose.
The smooth execution showed what's possible when organizations pool resources and volunteers. What could have been a disappointing cancellation became a county-wide expression of gratitude.
Sometimes the best plans are the ones you make when your original ones fall through.
