Victor Wembanyama Scores 35 in Historic Playoff Debut

Seven years felt like forever for San Antonio basketball fans, but one electric Sunday night reminded them why the wait was worth it.

Victor Wembanyama stepped onto the Frost Bank Arena court in bright orange size-20.5 shoes, and 22,000 fans knew they were about to witness something special. The 7-foot-4 center didn't just play in his first playoff game. He dominated it.

Wembanyama poured in 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting, shattering Tim Duncan's franchise record for a playoff debut. He drained five 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds, and blocked two shots as the Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers.

But the numbers only tell half the story. Six minutes into the game, Wembanyama grabbed a defensive rebound and did something centers aren't supposed to do. He took off coast-to-coast, dribbling behind his back at full speed, spinning away from defenders, and finishing with a thunderous dunk that brought the house down.

Spurs legends Tim Duncan and David Robinson sat 10 rows up, clapping and smiling in amazement. Neither Hall of Famer had ever made a play quite like that during their own legendary careers.

"It's something you know he's capable of," said Spurs center Luke Kornet. "But it's also something we've never seen before."

The performance drew comparisons to another legend's playoff debut. Twenty years ago, LeBron James scored 32 points with a triple-double in his first postseason game at the same age Wembanyama is now.

The city of San Antonio dressed the arena in pink, orange, and teal shirts for Fiesta Week. Even Robinson and Duncan wore their colors proudly. When Wembanyama emerged in matching orange shoes, the entire arena erupted.

"The first time I stepped on the court, even for warmups, I felt the atmosphere was different," Wembanyama said. "Everybody was ready."

For a franchise that never went more than one year without playoff basketball in its first 53 years in San Antonio, this return to postseason glory feels like coming home.
