Victoria Gamers Raise $1.8M for Sick Kids
A dedicated community of gamers in Victoria just turned a famously tedious video game into $1.8 million of joy for hospitalized children. Their record-breaking 169-hour livestream pushed their lifetime fundraising total past the $20 million milestone.
A community of passionate gamers in Victoria just proved that patience, humor, and goodwill can transform lives in pediatric hospital wards. Streaming continuously for 169 hours, the team behind Desert Bus for Hope raised a record-breaking $1.8 million for children facing medical battles.
The annual marathon centers on Desert Bus, widely celebrated as one of the most monotonous video games ever created. Players steer a virtual bus along an empty highway in real time for eight uninterrupted hours just to earn a single point.
Rather than letting the dull route slow them down, more than 175 volunteers infused the broadcast with music, live comedy, auctions, and interactive challenges. The stream stayed live as long as donations kept arriving, finally concluding after seven straight days of entertainment.
An average of 3,000 viewers watched at any given minute during the week-long broadcast. Supporters submitted thousands of creative challenges, contributed over 500,000 chat messages, and rallied together to surpass the previous fundraising record set in 2024.
More than 5,000 contributors chipped in from around the globe, while dozens of artisans donated handcrafted keepsakes to reward donors. The virtual drivers even achieved an all-time game record of 19 points, completing a legendary streak of 15 points without a single breakdown.

Every dollar raised directly benefits Child's Play Charity, an organization that provides therapeutic games, consoles, and interactive technology to pediatric hospitals worldwide. These tools give young patients a comforting distraction, helping them navigate stressful hospital visits with a renewed sense of fun.
Organizer James Turner shared heartfelt appreciation for the global community that made this milestone possible. He emphasized that the marathon succeeds every autumn because ordinary people choose to rally together for young patients who need extra joy.
The Ripple Effect
Celebrating its twentieth anniversary, Desert Bus for Hope has now raised more than $20 million since its humble beginnings. That sustained generosity equips hospital playrooms across the world with technology that eases anxiety, promotes healing, and creates genuine smiles.
Child-life specialists recognize therapeutic play as an essential component of recovery during long hospital stays. By transforming lighthearted internet fun into tangible comfort for brave kids, these gamers show the world that community kindness always goes the extra mile.
When compassionate people unite behind a worthy cause, even the plainest road can lead to pure magic.
