Vietnam Flag Lights Perth Town Hall for First Time

For the first time in history, Vietnam's red and gold flag glowed on the walls of Perth Town Hall, creating an emotional moment for the Vietnamese community in Western Australia.

The lighting ceremony on September 2 celebrated Vietnam's 81st National Day. Consul General Pham Hai Anh hosted nearly 200 guests as both nations' anthems filled the air.

The event marked more than just a milestone anniversary. It celebrated Vietnam's remarkable journey from independence in 1945 to becoming an upper-middle-income nation with a GDP of $514 billion in 2025.

Vietnam now maintains diplomatic relations with 194 countries and belongs to 70 international organizations. The country has trade relationships with 230 nations and participates in 17 free trade agreements, ranking among the world's top 20 trading economies.

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook attended the ceremony and praised the growing partnership between his state and Vietnam. He highlighted opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, education, and tourism.

The timing proved especially meaningful following Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam's visit to Australia in August. That trip produced new cooperation agreements covering healthcare, maritime law enforcement, vocational education, and the digital economy.

The Ripple Effect

The Vietnamese community in Western Australia has become a bridge between two nations separated by thousands of miles but united by common goals. Their contributions to the local economy, education, and agriculture have enriched the region's cultural fabric while maintaining strong ties to their homeland.

Premier Cook announced plans to visit Vietnam in late September 2026, signaling continued commitment to the partnership. Both sides see potential for businesses to grow through shared priorities like energy transition and innovation.

A photo exhibition during the celebration showcased Vietnam's landscapes and culture to international guests. The images painted a picture of a nation honoring its traditions while embracing dynamic growth and global integration.
