Vietnam Launches UN Decade for Culture and Development

A Vietnamese-led initiative just made history at the United Nations, and it could reshape how the world approaches development for the next ten years.

On September 4, the UN General Assembly adopted Vietnam's resolution establishing the "International Decade for Culture for Sustainable Development" from 2027 to 2036. More than 100 countries backed the proposal, marking Vietnam's largest initiative at UNESCO and a major diplomatic win for the Southeast Asian nation.

The resolution recognizes something often overlooked in development work: culture isn't just art and heritage. It's a genuine economic force that creates jobs, drives innovation, and brings communities together.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Vietnam's Permanent Representative to the UN, introduced the resolution after years of consultation and advocacy. The decade will focus on practical outcomes. It calls for increased investment in heritage education, cultural industries, and creative economies. It also emphasizes using traditional cultural knowledge to tackle modern challenges like climate change and environmental protection.
