Vietnam Province Lands $61M in New Wind Farm Projects

A mountainous province in central Vietnam is proving that the right natural conditions plus smart policy can transform a region into a clean energy magnet.

Gia Lai province secured multiple major wind power projects in the first half of 2026, including a $61 million wind farm set to break ground this December. The Chu Pong project, approved in late May, will begin generating clean electricity by early 2028 when construction wraps up.

The province isn't stopping there. In April, authorities greenlit another 42-megawatt wind farm with $64 million in backing. Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup also committed to two additional projects through its energy subsidiary, bringing total new investment to over $2 billion.

What makes Gia Lai such a draw? Strong, consistent winds sweep through the province's terrain, while abundant land gives developers room to build. Vietnam's updated National Power Development Plan prioritizes green growth, creating policy support that makes projects financially viable.

By the end of 2025, Gia Lai already had 87 renewable energy projects humming along. That includes 17 wind farms with combined capacity of 916 megawatts, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes without burning a single ounce of coal or gas.

The Ripple Effect

Gia Lai's success story shows how Vietnam is positioning itself as a Southeast Asian leader in the global energy transition. As countries worldwide race to meet climate commitments, provinces like this one demonstrate that emerging economies can leapfrog fossil fuels entirely when conditions align.

The investments bring more than clean power. Construction jobs, ongoing operations roles, and related service industries create employment in a region that historically relied on agriculture. Local communities benefit from infrastructure improvements that come with major development projects.

Other Vietnamese provinces are watching closely. If Gia Lai's model works, it could be replicated across regions with similar wind resources, accelerating the country's shift away from coal and toward renewables.

Vietnam aims to dramatically expand renewable capacity by 2030, and early results from Gia Lai suggest those ambitious targets might actually be within reach.
