Village in India Goes 2 Years Without Period Pad Waste

One man just proved that solving India's menstrual waste crisis is possible, one village at a time.

Tarun Kumar, known as the Padman of Jharkhand, has turned Dhatkidih village into a zero menstrual waste community for two full years. The village hasn't sent a single used pad to landfills since 2024.

Kumar started by distributing free sanitary pads across 120 villages in the Kolhan region. But he quickly realized he was creating a new problem: mountains of plastic waste that would take centuries to decompose.

So he switched strategies. Instead of disposable pads, Kumar began providing reusable menstrual kits to women across the region.

The results speak for themselves. Over 5,000 women now use reusable menstrual products, eliminating thousands of pounds of waste annually. Dhatkidih became the model that other villages wanted to follow.

The movement gained momentum as women saw their neighbors making the switch. Word spread from household to household, village to village. What started as one man's mission became a regional transformation.

The Ripple Effect

Kumar's work tackles two crises at once. Rural women gain access to safe menstrual products they can afford long term. The environment gets relief from non-biodegradable waste that pollutes soil and water.

The Kolhan region now serves as a blueprint for other parts of India struggling with menstrual waste. Local governments are taking notice, and activists in neighboring states are studying Kumar's approach.

His success proves that grassroots change doesn't require massive budgets or government mandates. It needs one committed person willing to show up consistently and offer practical solutions that actually work for rural communities.
