Viral Hippo Moo Deng Getting 10-Acre Habitat Upgrade

When millions of people started questioning whether viral sensation Moo Deng had enough space to roam, Thailand's Khao Kheow Open Zoo listened and took action.

The two-year-old pygmy hippo became an international celebrity in 2024, capturing hearts worldwide with adorable photos and videos. But recent social media posts by conservation advocate Siranudh Scott raised concerns about the enclosure, sparking a conversation that reached 3.9 million people.

The zoo quickly responded with transparency and a plan for improvement. Officials explained that what looked like poor conditions in photos were actually natural hippo droppings used for marking territory, and that caretakers clean the habitat daily following international animal welfare standards.

But they didn't stop at clarification. The zoo unveiled exciting plans for "Hippo Village," a brand new 10-acre expansion that will house seven pygmy hippos and six common hippos in larger, more naturalistic spaces designed to reduce stress and boost quality of life.

The new habitat will give Moo Deng and his mother Jonah room to thrive while construction is carefully managed to avoid disturbing them. The current enclosure already includes soil, mud, and aquatic plants specifically designed to maintain the high humidity hippos need for healthy skin and natural behavior.
