Virgin Australia Expands Pet-Friendly Flights to Adelaide

A tiny chihuahua named Jet just became one of the first pets to fly in the cabin from Adelaide, and his owner couldn't be happier about skipping the cargo hold.

Prue Burton watched faces light up as she carried six-year-old Jet in his carrier onto the Virgin Australia flight to Melbourne. The dog was so comfortable in his travel carrier that he actually growled when she tried to take him out before boarding.

Virgin Australia launched its Pets in Cabin program last October with flights between Melbourne and the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. The expansion to Adelaide adds flights to Melbourne and the Gold Coast for cats and dogs weighing up to 8 kilograms, including their carrier.

The program has already proven successful beyond expectations. Nearly 1,500 pets have flown in cabin since the launch, and the results speak volumes about how smoothly it's working.

Burton and her husband had wished for this option for years. "It just makes travel a lot easier for us," she said while Jet settled into his carrier like he'd been doing it his whole life.

Virgin Australia's chief marketing officer Libby Minogue said the positive customer feedback drove the decision to expand. The airline plans to potentially add more routes in the future, bringing this option to even more Australian pet owners who refuse to leave family members behind.
