Virginia Governor Signs Historic Gun Safety Laws

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed over a dozen gun safety bills into law this week, marking the Commonwealth's biggest public safety advance in history. The former Moms Demand Action volunteer fulfilled campaign promises to voters who elected a gun sense majority in 2025.

The new laws ban ghost guns, create pathways to hold the gun industry accountable, and add critical protections for domestic violence survivors. Additional bills await final language approval on April 22th before the governor's signature.

This transformation didn't happen overnight. For more than a decade, volunteers with Moms Demand Action organized across Virginia, demanding stronger protections for their communities while watching bills fail repeatedly.

Their strategy shifted from lobbying to running for office themselves. Today, former Moms Demand Action volunteers make up 20% of the House Democratic Majority, and three of them led the gun safety bills that just became law.

"This is what happens when we stop begging for change and start electing the changemakers," said Kelly Johnson, a Virginia volunteer with the organization. The state once known as the NRA's home base now leads the nation in gun violence prevention.

Students who grew up practicing lockdown drills celebrated the victory too. "We've grown up in the shadow of the gun violence epidemic," said Hattie Friedman, who leads a Students Demand Action group at First Colonial High School.

The Ripple Effect

Virginia's transformation sends a powerful message to advocates nationwide. When grassroots movements turn activism into elected leadership, policy follows.

The impact will be measurable. In an average year, Virginia sees 1,226 gun deaths and 1,624 injuries, with gun violence costing the state $14.2 billion annually.

These new protections will save lives in communities across the Commonwealth and provide a blueprint for other states working toward similar reforms.

Virginia proves that persistent organizing, strategic candidate support, and patience can transform a state's approach to public safety within a single generation.
