Virginia Picks Solar and Storage to Fix Power Crunch

These smaller solar installations offer a unique advantage because they generate power right where people need it. That reduces the burden on transmission lines and cuts the cost of expensive infrastructure upgrades that would otherwise be passed on to customers.

The second priority boosts Virginia's energy storage capacity statewide. Storage systems save electricity when it's cheap and abundant, then release it during peak hours when prices spike, helping to flatten costs for everyone on the grid.

States from Texas to Illinois are already using this approach successfully, proving it works regardless of political leanings. When storage absorbs power during low-demand periods and delivers it back when families are cooking dinner and running air conditioning, everyone's bills stay lower.

The third element streamlines the permitting process for residential solar panels. Right now, homeowners face delays and administrative costs that can add thousands of dollars to a project, but many states have already modernized their systems to approve solar installations faster and cheaper while maintaining safety standards.

The timing couldn't be better for Virginia residents and businesses. Natural gas prices are the biggest driver of electricity costs, and those prices swing unpredictably from month to month, making budgeting difficult for families and companies alike.
