Visalia Triples Mental Health Capacity in New Center

Families in California's South Valley no longer have to drive hours to find quality mental health and addiction treatment. Visalia just opened a brand new recovery center that triples the city's capacity to help people in crisis.

Visalia Recovery Center moved into its new location on East Caldwell Avenue this week, and the transformation is dramatic. The old facility could only serve 10 to 15 clients at a time in its cramped 2,000 square feet. Now the center welcomes 25 to 30 people simultaneously with dedicated counseling rooms, staff offices, and group therapy spaces.

For CEO Nolen Burchett, opening the facility in his hometown feels like a dream realized. "Visalia doesn't have any other private treatment services," he explains. The city desperately needed more options as drug addiction and alcoholism continued affecting families across the region.

The center treats adults over 18 from all backgrounds, offering substance abuse programs that were previously unavailable locally. But the good news doesn't stop there.

Right next door, Ascend and Sierra Meadows Behavioral Health opened their doors to provide mental health services for both children and adults. Families can access intensive outpatient care and partial hospitalization services without leaving their community.

Dr. Jason Christopherson, Vice President of Pediatric Services at Ascend, says distance was one of the biggest barriers families faced. "We want to help Visalia and the surrounding communities have access to those services, so that they can feel like they have high quality services that a large city can provide."

The expansion also means better care through diversity. The new facility can support a varied team including mental health professionals, training child psychiatrists, group facilitation specialists, and case managers working together under one roof.

The Ripple Effect

By placing addiction treatment and mental health services side by side, both facilities can address these interconnected challenges as a team. When someone struggling with substance abuse also needs mental health support, or when a family needs comprehensive care, they won't have to coordinate between distant cities anymore.

The community celebrated with an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, giving neighbors a chance to tour the spaces that will serve as healing grounds for years to come.
