Volunteer Ali Giffen Surprised After Years of Giving Back

When flowers and a spa gift card appeared at Ali Giffen's door, she thought they must be for her daughter.

They weren't. The surprise was for her, a thank you for years of quietly serving her Orillia community through volunteer work and mentorship.

"I was overwhelmed and humbled at the same time," Ali said. "I was really grateful that someone took the time to recognize the volunteerism that I do."

Her friend Tim organized the recognition through OrilliaMatters, wanting to celebrate the compassion she brings to everyone around her. The gesture caught Ali completely off guard after so many years of giving without expecting anything in return.

Ali's volunteer story started with the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser at the Lighthouse. She showed up to help with one event and fell in love with the organization's mission.

What began as a single evening turned into years of commitment. She joined planning committees, supported kitchen operations, helped with fundraising events, and eventually served six years on the board of directors.

She recently stepped down from the board to catch her breath and make space for fresh voices. But she's not going far.

"I told them I wasn't going far," she said. "Maybe I can use some of my skills in a different way."

Beyond the Lighthouse, Ali stays active in her church community alongside her husband, a pastor. She mentors others while juggling work and family responsibilities.
