Volunteer Brings Hope to Grieving Kids in Central Florida

Robert Talley arrives at New Hope for Kids every single week with one simple goal: help children smile while they heal from grief and trauma.

The Maitland nonprofit serves Central Florida children navigating the loss of loved ones, life-threatening illnesses, and traumatic experiences. At first glance, it looks like any summer camp with laughing kids and games, but the mission goes much deeper.

"You come here, even if you're in a bad mood when you arrive, by the time you leave you're in a great mood," Talley said. "You feel really uplifted and feel like you've done something good."

That feeling keeps him coming back without pay or recognition. He simply shows up, ready to help.

Tezmon Oehler-Williams, director of programming at New Hope for Kids, says Talley stands out among all volunteers. "He is one of our most consistent volunteers," she said. "We have our groups every other week, but he comes every week because that's how important it is to him."

The organization now celebrates 30 years of serving families with just five full-time staff members. They support hundreds of children and families annually through two core programs: free grief support and wish experiences for children facing life-threatening illnesses.

"Volunteers are essential. We could not survive," Oehler-Williams said. The small team relies entirely on dedicated people like Talley to reach every child who needs help.

Talley understands that the children don't forget their worries, but they can set them aside for a while. Watching kids regain confidence, build friendships, and leave with genuine smiles makes every moment worthwhile for him.

His reward isn't measured in hours or recognition. It's found in the faces of children who discover they can laugh again, play again, and feel hope for their future.
