Volunteer Officer Saves Life on Her First Day on Duty

When Sophie Hyde showed up for her first day as a volunteer police officer in Northamptonshire, England, she probably expected paperwork and patrols. Instead, she found herself racing to save a drowning man from a pitch-black river.

On July 30, Hyde and fellow special constables Lorna Montecalvo and Pete Isom responded to a welfare check in Warmington at 7:40 PM. Four hours later, they discovered an unconscious man in the River Nene near Elton Quarry after a passerby found his rucksack abandoned on the bank.

Hyde spotted the man in the dark water and held out a torch while Montecalvo, a mother of three, dove into the river. Swimming through the pitch-black depths, Montecalvo reached the unconscious man and began towing him back to shore.

"The only thing that was going through my head was, 'I've got to get in, I've got to get there quick,'" Montecalvo said. But the swim nearly ended in tragedy when she reached the bank completely exhausted, on her last breath.

That's when Isom made his own leap of courage. Despite not knowing how to swim, he waded into the water, gripping the reeds to stay connected to the bank, and pulled Montecalvo the final few feet to safety.

"I was holding onto the reeds pretty much the entire time so that I still had contact with the bank and I reached out and just grabbed her," Isom said. Together, the three officers and the helpful citizen pulled the man from the water and got him to safety.

None of these volunteers call themselves heroes, but their actions show something powerful about everyday courage. Hyde's fight-or-flight instinct kicked in on her very first day. Montecalvo swam into danger thinking of her three children waiting at home. Isom faced his fear of water to save a colleague.

"If we were not in police uniform, we'd have still done the same thing," Isom said. That's the heart of it: these are regular people who chose to help when it mattered most.

Chief Constable Ivan Balhatchet praised the trio as representing "the very best of policing," but their story goes beyond badges and training. It's about ordinary people rising to extraordinary moments because someone needed help.

The rescued man is recovering, and three volunteer officers learned just how much they're capable of when courage calls.
