Volunteers Needed to Honor 400,000 Heroes at Arlington
The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation needs hundreds of volunteers this Saturday to place 200,000 flowers on graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The tradition honors more than 400,000 fallen service members in a moving tribute that dates back to 2011.
This Saturday, volunteers will gather at Arlington National Cemetery for a mission of remembrance that transforms grief into gratitude, one flower at a time.
The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation is calling for hundreds of volunteers to help place 200,000 flowers on graves throughout Arlington National Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day. The annual tradition honors the more than 400,000 military members laid to rest there who gave their lives serving the country.
"This is an excellent way to honor our fallen troops and veterans for Memorial Day," said Ramiro Penaherrera, the foundation's executive director. "It hearkens back to the historic observance of Memorial Day, when families would visit gravesites and decorate them with flowers."
The event takes place Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with additional volunteers needed on Memorial Day itself. Volunteers pick up flowers at the service complex on Patton Drive, then walk throughout the cemetery to place individual blooms in front of headstones.

The foundation asks volunteers to pause at each grave, read the name aloud, and place the flower in the grass where it can later be mulched naturally. These small moments of recognition mean everything to families who have lost loved ones in service.
Why This Inspires
What began in 2011 has grown into a powerful community tradition that connects strangers through shared gratitude. Volunteers of all ages come together to ensure not a single grave goes unrecognized on Memorial Day weekend.
The simple act of reading a name, pausing to reflect, and leaving a flower creates thousands of individual tributes. Each bloom represents a life lived in service and a community that refuses to forget.
Volunteers need only bring government ID for security clearance, comfortable walking shoes, reusable shopping bags, and plenty of water. The foundation provides everything else, including the profound experience of honoring heroes who can no longer speak for themselves.
Those who want to help can sign up at MemorialDayFlowers.org, where donations are also welcome to support future tributes. Every volunteer makes it possible to reach more graves and touch more families with this gesture of remembrance.
