Volunteers Turn Church Into Firefighter Haven in Georgia
While crews battle one of Georgia's largest wildfires, volunteers are running a full service base with showers, laundry, and beds at a small town church. About 50 firefighters rotate through daily, getting clean gear and rest before heading back to protect homes.
Firefighters battling the massive Highway 82 wildfire in Georgia are getting an unexpected lifeline from volunteers who've transformed a small church into a complete support station.
At Lulaton Baptist Church in Nahunta, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers have created a temporary home base where exhausted crews can shower, sleep, and get their gear professionally cleaned between shifts. The group typically responds to hurricanes and tornadoes, but this wildfire pulled them in a new direction.
"They're putting their life on the line," said Richie Howard, a chaplain with the organization. "I can't tell you how many homes down that road that fire literally went around the house because there's some firefighter fighting there."
About 50 firefighters are staying at the church as they rotate in and out. The setup includes showers, laundry facilities, sleeping areas, and everything crews need to reset before their next shift protecting homes from the flames.
The laundry operation alone shows the volunteers' dedication. They run fire gear through washing machines two or three times to remove dangerous carcinogens and grime that builds up on the front lines.

The Ripple Effect
What started as basic support has become something deeper for both firefighters and volunteers. Many arriving crews are amazed to learn everyone helping them is volunteering their time.
Howard said the three-person rotating shift system means as some firefighters leave, others from the same county arrive to take their place. The steady rhythm keeps the church buzzing with activity while ensuring crews get the rest they desperately need.
The volunteers see their work as more than just providing showers and clean clothes. "We just serve them and let them feel our love, the love of God through us," Howard explained.
The church has been operating as a fire base for about a week, and volunteers are already looking ahead. Once the fire is contained, they plan to help homeowners begin recovering and rebuilding.
For now, Howard and his team keep the coffee hot, the showers running, and the beds ready for the next wave of exhausted heroes walking through the door.
