Volvo Brings Advanced EVs to the Philippines

Volvo just made Filipino car buyers an offer they couldn't ignore: two of the automaker's most advanced electric vehicles are now available in Manila.

The Swedish carmaker officially launched the EX90 SUV and ES90 sedan in the Philippines before the end of February. Both vehicles bring technology and range that rival anything available globally.

The EX90 is a seven-seat SUV that packs 456 horsepower and a 111-kWh battery delivering up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. Its standout feature is roofline-integrated lidar that works alongside cameras and radar for advanced driver assistance.

Fast charging is genuinely impressive. The EX90 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes at speeds up to 350 kW, competitive with the best EVs worldwide.

The ES90 sedan might be even more technically forward. Built on an 800-volt architecture typically found in premium brands like Porsche, it achieves up to 700 kilometers of range and boasts a sleek 0.25 drag coefficient.

Pricing starts at 5.265 million pesos (about $89,130) for the ES90 and 5.99 million pesos ($101,400) for the EX90. That puts them firmly in luxury territory, though more affordable than many expected for vehicles of this caliber.

The Ripple Effect

This launch matters beyond just two new car models. When global automakers bring their flagship technology to emerging markets, it signals confidence in those markets' future.

The Philippines has faced challenges with EV adoption. Charging infrastructure outside Metro Manila remains limited, and the buyer pool at this price point is small.

But premium launches like these typically pave the way for more accessible options. Volvo's smaller EX30 is already in the pipeline for the region, where the real volume story will likely unfold.

Filipino car enthusiasts are also gaining access to cutting-edge automotive technology without the typical years-long wait that used to define emerging markets. The same vehicles driving through Stockholm or Los Angeles are now navigating Manila traffic.

Southeast Asia is becoming a real player in the global EV transition, not just a market waiting on the sidelines for hand-me-down technology.

The road ahead for Philippine EV adoption still has obstacles, but launches like this prove the journey is well underway.
