Volvo Makes EV Charging as Easy as Pumping Gas

Electric car drivers just got a solution to one of their biggest frustrations: the hassle of starting a charging session.

Volvo introduced Plug & Charge technology for its EX90 SUV, letting drivers charge their vehicles without opening apps or swiping credit cards. The car handles everything automatically when you plug in at participating stations.

Here's how it works: once activated, the vehicle communicates directly with the charging station to verify your identity and process payment. Drivers simply connect the charger and leave while their car powers up on its own.

The feature is available now for current EX90 owners in the US. Newer 2025 models need a specific computer configuration (NVIDIA Orin) to support the technology.

Volvo drivers can access over 35,000 charging stations with this seamless experience, including Tesla Superchargers and the growing IONNA network. The EX90 uses an adapter to work with different charging port types, and the upcoming EX60 model will have this capability built in from day one.

Finding compatible chargers is simple through the car's Google-based navigation system or the Volvo app. The system even adds charging stops to your route automatically when your battery runs low.
