Wales Jobs Guarantee Puts 3,500 Young People to Work

The first wave of young Welsh workers just clocked in at their new jobs, and every single position is backed by a program designed to break the unemployment cycle before it takes hold.

Wales is rolling out 3,500 positions over the next three years for 18 to 24 year olds who've been searching for work for at least 18 months. The Jobs Guarantee scheme matches young people with roles suited to their skills, then covers up to 25 hours of paid work per week for six months.

The first group started this month in Cardiff, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Swansea, Caerphilly, and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Major employers in construction, retail, and hospitality have signed on to provide these opportunities.

The program goes beyond just handing out jobs. Young workers get personalized support tackling whatever stands between them and steady employment, whether that's confidence building or on the job skills training. They arrive ready to work and get the backing they need to stay employed.

The timing matters because research shows the longer someone stays unemployed, the harder it becomes to start again. Catching young people at 18 months prevents them from sliding into long term joblessness that can define their entire careers.

The Ripple Effect

More than 56,000 young people in Wales aren't currently earning or learning. This program targets exactly that gap, turning potential into paychecks across every postcode in Wales.

The scheme is launching alongside 20 new Youth Hubs across the country and a Youth Jobs Grant to help businesses hire young workers. Together, these initiatives form a £2.5 billion investment that will create 500,000 opportunities for young people across the UK over three years.

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden put it simply: "Real jobs, proper wages, and a genuine route into a career." For the young people starting work this month, that's not a promise anymore. It's their Monday morning.

The program expands nationally later this year to reach every eligible young person on Universal Credit who's been job hunting for 18 months. Local partners will keep matching workers with employers and providing support to make sure these placements stick.

By 2029, the Jobs Guarantee will have created over 90,000 fully funded positions across the UK, giving tens of thousands of young people their crucial first step on the career ladder.
