Walmart Brings Discount EV Charging to California Stores

Shopping for groceries and charging your electric vehicle at the same time just got easier and cheaper in California.

Walmart announced it's bringing its fast-charging EV network to six Golden State locations, including stores in Antelope, Brea, Fresno, Stockton, Suisun City, and Vallejo. Most sites will feature between 8 and 16 charging stalls available 24 hours a day.

The retail giant is sweetening the deal for Walmart Plus members with a 10% discount off the average charging price of 46 cents per kilowatt-hour. Customers can plug in while they shop, turning errand time into charging time.

Walmart's strategic advantage is hard to beat. More than 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of one of the company's 5,000-plus stores, making its charging network incredibly accessible for everyday drivers, not just road trippers.

The network is growing fast. Walmart already operates chargers at 75 locations across 17 states, with Texas, Florida, and Arizona leading the pack. The company added 25 new charging sites in May alone and six more in June, with plans to reach 29 states soon.

Each charging station uses powerful 400-kilowatt chargers with dual cords that work with both older Combined Charging System plugs and Tesla's newer North American Charging Standard connectors. That means almost any EV can pull up and power up.

Customers can pay through the Walmart app and check charger availability before they arrive. The company is also testing built-in credit card readers for shoppers who prefer not to use the app.

The Ripple Effect

Walmart's charging expansion targets states and communities with the greatest need for EV infrastructure. By placing chargers where people already shop regularly, the company is removing one of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption: charging anxiety.

The retail-integrated model makes EV ownership more practical for everyday Americans. Instead of planning trips around charging stations or waiting at highway rest stops, drivers can charge during their weekly grocery run or quick shopping trips.

Since announcing the initiative in April 2023, Walmart has installed 612 individual charging stalls and aims to add thousands more by 2030. The company partnered with ABB E-Mobility and Alpitronic to accelerate the rollout.

California's six new locations join a growing movement making clean transportation accessible where people live and shop. When charging an EV becomes as routine as picking up milk, more drivers can make the electric switch with confidence.
