Walmart Installs 400 kW Fast Chargers at Phoenix Stores

Imagine topping up your electric car while grabbing groceries, and being back on the road before you finish shopping.

Walmart just made that a reality in Phoenix, partnering with ABB E-mobility to install blazing-fast 400-kilowatt chargers at stores across the metro area. The first locations are already going live in Mesa, Tempe, Apache Junction, and Queen Creek, with nine Phoenix-area stores getting 38 total chargers in the coming months.

These aren't your average charging stations. The new ABB A400 units can deliver enough power to add significant range in just minutes, with a single vehicle pulling the full 400 kW or two cars charging simultaneously at 200 kW each. That's fast enough to make charging feel less like a chore and more like a quick pit stop.

Walmart picked the perfect setup for this rollout. With over 5,200 Walmart and Sam's Club locations nationwide, roughly 90% of Americans already live within 10 miles of one. By placing chargers where people already shop weekly, the retail giant is solving one of electric vehicle ownership's biggest headaches: finding convenient, reliable charging when you need it most.

The timing couldn't be better for drivers without home chargers or those needing a quick boost on longer trips. Shoppers can start charging sessions right through the Walmart app, making the whole experience seamless from parking lot to checkout line.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership creates wins across the board. EV drivers get more charging options exactly where they need them. Walmart benefits too, with studies showing that nearby EV chargers can boost store visits by up to 4%, and drivers naturally spend more time browsing while their cars charge.

The infrastructure itself is built to grow. ABB designed these installations with future expansion in mind, including electrical systems that can support battery storage and additional chargers as demand increases. The chargers support both older CCS connectors and the newer NACS standard, making them accessible to virtually every electric vehicle on the road.

Beyond Phoenix, Walmart is rolling out these same chargers at stores in Colorado, Florida, and Georgia as part of a broader nationwide push. ABB claims 99% uptime for the A400 systems, addressing reliability concerns that have plagued some earlier charging networks.
