Washington State Wins First Baseball Title in 31 Years

Washington State baseball just ended a 31-year championship drought in the most dramatic way possible.

The Cougars defeated San Diego State 14-4 in Mesa, Arizona, on Sunday to capture the Mountain West Conference tournament title. It's their first conference championship since 1995 and their first trip to the NCAA regionals since 2010.

The victory was especially sweet because it came in a winner-take-all final game. San Diego State had beaten the Cougars earlier that day, forcing a second championship game that same afternoon.

Washington State trailed 4-3 heading into the fifth inning before the offense came alive. The team scored three runs to take the lead, then exploded for seven more runs in the seventh inning to trigger the 10-run mercy rule.

Second baseman Gavin Roy earned tournament MVP honors after an incredible week at the plate. He collected eight hits, drove in seven runs, and scored six times across four games at Sloan Park.

Dustin Robinson made history in the final game by hitting two doubles, tying a tournament championship game record. His back-to-back doubles with Ryan Skjonsby in the fifth inning sparked the comeback that gave Washington State a 6-4 lead they never surrendered.

The pitching staff was equally impressive. Scott Rienguette earned the win by throwing 3.2 dominant innings, striking out six batters while allowing just one hit.
