Water Polo Star Saves 3 Girls From Drowning at Seattle Fest

Lillie Vehling went to Seattle's Seafair festival to watch the Blue Angels perform, but ended up saving three lives instead.

The UC Davis water polo player was at Genesee Park on Lake Washington when she noticed three girls struggling in the water on July 31. They were bobbing up and down, gasping for air, with one girl accidentally pushing the others under in her panic to breathe.

Vehling jumped in immediately. Her water polo training kicked in as she began pulling the girls to safety one at a time, starting with the one who was drowning the others.

After getting the first two swimmers to shallow water, she turned back for the third girl. Only the top of her head was visible, her black hair barely floating on the surface.

The girl was unconscious when Vehling reached her. She lifted her head out of the water and held her up by the armpit until the girl coughed up water and came to.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second-leading cause of injury death for kids 5 to 14, according to the CDC. Stories like this remind us that water safety matters and that one person paying attention can make all the difference.

Seafair honored Vehling at its gala, where she was knighted and named Seafair royalty. She also got that Blue Angels experience she came for, now with an incredible story to go with it.
