Waymo Orders 50,000 Hyundai EVs for Robotaxi Expansion

The future of transportation just took its biggest leap forward yet, as Waymo prepares to order 50,000 electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles for its expanding robotaxi fleet.

The potential deal, valued at roughly $2.5 billion, would be the largest autonomous vehicle supply agreement ever signed. If finalized, it signals that self-driving cars are moving from small-scale experiments to industrial-level reality.

Waymo, the world's leading autonomous driving company, currently operates about 2,500 vehicles and delivers more than 400,000 paid rides weekly across several U.S. cities. But the company just raised $16 billion to expand to over 20 new cities this year, including Tokyo and London, creating an urgent need for thousands more vehicles.

That's where Hyundai comes in. The two companies announced a partnership in October 2024 to integrate Waymo's self-driving technology into the IONIQ 5, a spacious electric SUV built at Hyundai's Georgia factory.

The IONIQ 5 makes perfect sense for a robotaxi fleet. It charges from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, minimizing downtime between rides, and offers a roomy cabin that passengers appreciate when no human driver sits up front.

The Ripple Effect

This deal represents more than just Waymo growing bigger. It shows traditional automakers are betting their futures on autonomous technology that actually works today, not promises years away.

Ford's CEO Jim Farley publicly chose Waymo's technology over competitors, saying it "made more sense" for his company's future. Toyota partnered with Waymo in April 2025 to explore bringing self-driving features to personally owned vehicles, directly targeting the consumer market.

Meanwhile, manufacturing 50,000 vehicles at Hyundai's American plant means creating thousands of jobs building the transportation technology of tomorrow. The deal also helps both companies avoid international tariff complications while qualifying for domestic manufacturing incentives.

For years, skeptics argued that autonomous vehicles could never scale beyond small pilot programs. That argument just collapsed under the weight of a $2.5 billion order, a $16 billion funding round, and partnerships with three of the world's largest automakers.

The question isn't whether self-driving cars will transform how we move anymore—it's how quickly the rest of the industry can catch up to what Waymo is already building.
