Forty years ago, the biggest names in music walked into a Los Angeles recording studio and created something that would keep giving long after the final note played.

In January 1985, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote "We Are The World" to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. They convinced over three dozen superstars to join them, including Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, and Cyndi Lauper.

Producer Quincy Jones set the tone before recording began. He scribbled a sign at the studio entrance that read "Leave your egos at the door," reminding everyone why they were really there.

The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold 1 million copies in its first weekend alone, according to the Netflix documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop."

But here's the truly remarkable part: the giving never stopped. Since 1985, "We Are The World" has raised over $80 million for humanitarian causes in Africa, which equals approximately $160 million in today's dollars.

The Ripple Effect

The song didn't just raise money. It sparked a cultural shift in how people think about charitable giving.

"I think every individual in the world wants to contribute and they don't know how," Diana Ross said in 1985. "I got a feeling that we're creating a shift in what's going on in the world today, about helping other people. It's compassion."

That shift continues today. The song still generates revenue for humanitarian work, proving that one night of collaboration can create decades of impact.
