West Bend Nonprofit Helps Cancer Survivors Stay Afloat

When Chris Otto hit three years and one day past her terminal cancer diagnosis, she realized something incredible: she wasn't supposed to still be here.

Eleven years ago, doctors gave the Slinger, Wisconsin woman three years to live after diagnosing her with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her bones. A trial drug treatment kept her alive well beyond that timeline, but surviving cancer brings its own challenges, especially the crushing weight of medical bills.

That's where Chix 4 a Cause steps in. The West Bend nonprofit helps cancer survivors currently in treatment with financial assistance for utility bills, groceries, and even vacation stays in Wisconsin.

But the organization offers something even more valuable than money: friendship from someone who's walked the same terrifying path. Executive Director Carmen Fox is herself a cancer survivor who once received support from the very organization she now leads.

"I didn't realize what a dark place I was getting into until I did receive that gift of love," Fox said. "It really was the shining light that I was looking for that I didn't realize I needed."

Fox grew up in Washington County and wanted to give back to the community that supported her through treatment. She knows firsthand how isolating a cancer diagnosis can feel, and how much it means when someone truly understands your struggle.

For Otto, the support has been life changing. "The gift that Carmen gave me is incredible," she said. "People look at the outside of the box and don't realize everything that goes on inside."

The Ripple Effect

The organization serves cancer survivors of any age, gender, and background across southeastern Wisconsin. What started as financial assistance has grown into a network of support that touches lives in unexpected ways.

Fox said even brief moments of peace carry enormous weight for those battling cancer. Just giving someone a moment to forget about their diagnosis, to feel seen and supported, creates ripples of hope that extend far beyond a single grocery bill or utility payment.

The nonprofit proves that sometimes the most powerful medicine isn't found in a prescription bottle. It's found in a community that refuses to let its members fight alone, in a phone call from someone who understands, and in the simple act of showing up for someone when they need it most.

Otto is living proof that outliving a death sentence is possible, and thriving with the right support makes all the difference.
