West Ham Legend 'Big Ludo' Miklosko Dies at 64

More than a quarter century after hanging up his gloves, West Ham fans still belt out the chant that immortalized their beloved goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko.

The towering Czech shot-stopper, who died Monday at age 64 after a three-year cancer battle, earned that devotion through fearless performances and a pioneering spirit that opened doors for countless players who followed.

When Miklosko arrived at Heathrow Airport in February 1990, English football had barely heard of him. The fall of communism had just made his move possible, and the 28-year-old became the first professional player to move from Czechoslovakia to England.

He spoke little English, had no car, and stayed in a hotel while teammates gave him rides to training. But the 6-foot-5 goalkeeper quickly proved his £300,000 price tag was a bargain.

Over eight years, Miklosko made 374 appearances for the Hammers and became a legend. His finest moment came on the final day of the 1994-95 season when he single-handedly denied Manchester United the Premier League title with a string of jaw-dropping saves that left manager Alex Ferguson calling it a "siege."

Years later, when Miklosko visited Manchester United's training academy, staff members told him they remembered hating him that day. Everyone laughed about it together.

"I have two football clubs in my heart," he once said. "West Ham United is my second family. After all these years, they still remember me, still sing my name, and that is a great feeling."
