West Valley Girls Win 6th County Title in 8 Years

The West Valley Middle School Lady Wolves haven't lost a basketball game since December 2024, and they just proved why with their sixth Knox County championship in eight years.

The defending state champions defeated Hardin Valley 53-43 on Wednesday night, capping off a perfect 28-0 season. The Lady Wolves' last loss came during their own Christmas tournament more than a year ago.

What makes this program special isn't just the trophies. Coach Josh Ballard credits his players' willingness to put the team first, and the results speak louder than any scoreboard.

"We have great kids, we have great parents," Ballard said after the victory. He also praised assistant coach Scott Wilson, who's been by his side for nine years building something bigger than basketball.

The team's balanced approach showed in the championship game. Four different players scored seven or more points, led by Reese Underwood's 12 and three-year starter Emery Cooper's 11.

Reese Davis came off the bench in the second quarter and hit crucial shots that helped West Valley build a 25-18 halftime lead. That's the kind of sacrifice Ballard talks about when he describes this year's squad.

The program has become a pipeline for future college athletes. Former Lady Wolves player Avery Treadwell now plays basketball at Florida State, while Brinley Murphy competed in SEC soccer at Florida after starting her college career at South Carolina.

The Ripple Effect

West Valley's success ripples far beyond middle school gyms. The program has maintained excellence through three different head coaches since the school opened in 1993, creating a culture where winning becomes sustainable.

That consistency teaches young athletes lessons that last well beyond their playing days. When players see teammates going on to compete at Florida State and in the SEC, they understand that hard work and teamwork open doors.

The community support runs deep too. Parents, coaches, and players all buy into a system that values the collective over the individual, creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

Even in victory, Ballard showed respect for Hardin Valley's 23-4 season and star player Reese Galloway, who scored 23 points in the championship game. Great programs recognize great competition.

West Valley has now appeared in seven of the last eight county championship games, proving their dominance wasn't a fluke but a foundation built on the right values.
