West Virginia Women Win Big 12 Title in Comeback Season

After losing twice to TCU during the regular season by a combined three points, the West Virginia women's basketball team just proved that persistence beats perfection.

The second-seeded Mountaineers captured the Big 12 tournament championship Sunday in Kansas City, defeating top-seeded TCU 62-53. It marked their first conference tournament title since 2017 and capped a remarkable 27-6 season.

Jordan Harrison, a senior from Oklahoma City, delivered when it mattered most with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Sydney Shaw added 17 points as West Virginia's relentless defensive pressure finally cracked the code against a team that had beaten them by one point in January and nine points in February.

The victory tasted even sweeter considering the obstacles. TCU came in as the defending Big 12 tournament champion with a 29-5 record and the league's player of the year, Olivia Miles, leading the charge.

But foul trouble plagued Miles throughout the game, limiting her aggression despite scoring 17 points. She picked up her fourth foul just 39 seconds into the second half, forcing her to play conservatively while her teammates struggled to compensate.

West Virginia's full-court pressure disrupted TCU's offensive rhythm all game. The Mountaineers turned defense into offense repeatedly, including a stretch where Harrison converted a steal into a coast-to-coast layup, then Shaw created another turnover that led to an easy basket on the next possession.

The game stayed close until the final minutes. With 90 seconds remaining and West Virginia leading 56-43, TCU made one last push with seven straight points. Harrison calmly sank two free throws with 33 seconds left to seal the victory for the Mountaineers.
