Western Australia Welcomes Surprise Quadruplets After IVF

Belinda and Emmanuel Lotsu thought they were prepared for triplets. Then doctors found baby number four.

The Kalgoorlie couple welcomed quadruplets on Tuesday at Perth's King Edward Memorial Hospital, delivering one boy and three girls through a carefully planned caesarean birth. Amy, Amana, Amber, and Amon became the first quads born in Western Australia in six years.

Belinda, 45, discovered the surprise fourth baby more than halfway through her IVF pregnancy. "You could see the surprise on her face," Emmanuel recalled, describing his wife's stunned reaction to the news.

The discovery transformed their plans overnight. What was already an extraordinary pregnancy became something even rarer: the fifteenth recorded set of quadruplets in WA's entire health history.

The couple moved to Kalgoorlie from Ghana two years ago with their three-year-old son. Without direct family nearby, they've built a support network through their local church and the Ghanaian community in the regional mining town.

Hospital staff worked for months preparing for the historic birth. Nurse coordinator Jourdin Ross said her team created extensive contingency plans covering emergency scenarios, neonatal care capacity, and safety protocols for every stage.

"Beyond clinical care, the hospital wrapped comprehensive support around the family," Ross said. The team focused on ensuring compassion and continuity during what she called an extraordinary and stressful experience.

All four babies are now receiving specialist neonatal care at the hospital. The Lotsus expect to bring them home to Kalgoorlie in a few weeks, where their community eagerly awaits the growing family.
