After four years of construction, Western Sydney's first major cultural institution is ready to welcome visitors. The Powerhouse Parramatta will offer free entry and aims to bring world-class arts and culture to a fast-growing community.

Western Sydney is getting something it's never had before: a world-class museum built just for its communities.

The $915 million Powerhouse Parramatta officially completed construction this week, with builder LendLease handing over the keys to the museum team. After four years of work, the massive cultural institution is on track to open its doors in September.

"This is Western Sydney's first major cultural institution," says Powerhouse CEO Lisa Havilah. The investment means diverse, young, and rapidly growing communities will have direct access to top-tier arts and culture right in their own backyard.

The museum spans seven expansive zones, including an 18-meter high space covering 2,200 square meters. That giant hall will house Task Eternal, Australia's largest exhibition about space exploration.

But the Powerhouse is more than just exhibits. A public rooftop garden will host horticulture demonstrations, while a 60-bed accommodation area will welcome 10,000 visiting students each year for immersive learning programs.

The museum team is now racing to install five exhibitions before the fall opening. Arts Minister John Graham confirmed that general entry will be free, with only special exhibits like Task Eternal requiring paid tickets.

The Ripple Effect

The museum's impact extends beyond its walls. A pedestrian-friendly walkway passes directly through the building, connecting the Parramatta River to Parramatta Square as the area continues to transform.

As the nearby Sydney Metro project progresses toward its 2032 completion, the Powerhouse will anchor a new cultural corridor for Western Sydney's 2.7 million residents.

Local MP Donna Davis captures the excitement: "When it opens later this year it will truly change our city. The ambition of this museum matches the ambition of the people of Parramatta."

The original Powerhouse museum in Ultimo closed in February 2024 for major renovations and will reopen in 2027, giving Sydney two world-class venues serving different communities.

For Western Sydney's families, students, and culture lovers, September can't come soon enough.
