Westlake Volunteers Prep Free Prom Closet for Teens

For the third year running, the Yarrow Family YMCA is hosting a prom closet where teens can pick out complete outfits for their big night without spending a dime. Volunteers gathered on April 10 to organize donated dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories ahead of the giveaway.

The program addresses a real barrier many families face. Prom expenses can easily top $300 per student when you factor in attire, alterations, and accessories. For families already stretched thin, that price tag can mean their kid misses out on a milestone memory.

The Westlake prom closet removes that obstacle entirely. Students browse through donated formal wear just like they would at any boutique, trying on options until they find something that makes them feel amazing. No applications, no proof of need, no strings attached.

Community members donate gently used prom attire throughout the year, and volunteers spend hours sorting, steaming, and organizing everything by size. The effort ensures that when students arrive, they walk into a real shopping experience, not a charity handout.
