WHO Praises Ethiopia's AI-Driven Green Health Revolution

Ethiopia is proving that the future of healthcare isn't just about treating illness but preventing it through smart technology and environmental action. The World Health Organization representative to Ethiopia has praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for championing an innovative strategy that links AI-powered digital health systems with massive green development projects.

Francis Chisaka Kasolo, WHO's representative to Ethiopia, the African Union, and UNECA, called Ethiopia a frontrunner in using emerging technologies to advance public health. The Prime Minister recently received an African Union award recognizing his leadership in artificial intelligence and digital health.

What makes Ethiopia's approach special is how it connects seemingly separate initiatives. The country's Green Legacy Initiative, which focuses on planting trees and improving air quality, directly supports public health by reducing respiratory diseases and even some forms of cancer.

Kasolo explained that clean air from tree planting leads to fewer breathing problems, while Addis Ababa's urban corridor development projects improve sanitation and reduce waterborne diseases. Instead of waiting to treat conditions caused by poor environmental conditions, Ethiopia is investing in prevention.

The WHO representative emphasized that health extends far beyond hospital walls. Climate change, environmental degradation, and humanitarian crises all significantly impact public health, making cross-sector collaboration essential.

WHO is now actively supporting Ethiopia's digital transformation in healthcare, working closely with the Ministry of Health to advance this integrated agenda. Kasolo stressed that AI and digital tools should do more than predict disease outbreaks. They should fundamentally transform how countries plan and deliver health services.

Kasolo specifically called for other African nations to replicate Ethiopia's approach. These initiatives beautify cities while contributing significantly to population health, creating a win-win scenario for development and wellbeing.
