Wichita State Battles Past Midnight to Keep Season Alive

College baseball delivered high drama under the Florida lights as Wichita State refused to let their season end, outlasting Memphis 6-4 in an elimination game that didn't finish until after midnight.

The seventh-seeded Shockers jumped out early at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater when Jayson Jones launched his 15th home run of the season in the first inning. Teammate Ethan Gonzalez followed with another blast in the second, giving Wichita State a 2-0 cushion that would prove critical.

The offense kept rolling as Kaleb Duncan drove in two runs with a single in the third inning. Jacob Gutierrez added another RBI in the fifth, extending the lead to 5-1 and giving starting pitcher Caleb Reed plenty of breathing room.

Reed dominated for 6.2 innings, striking out eight batters while allowing just three earned runs. His performance improved his season record to an impressive 6-1.

Memphis refused to fade quietly into the night. The Tigers clawed back with two runs in the seventh inning when Trae Cassidy's single scored Brady McAbee, followed by Michael Gupton racing home on a wild pitch.

After Wichita State added an insurance run in the eighth, Memphis slugger Marcus Smith crushed a solo home run to center field in the ninth. The blast cut the deficit to 6-4 and brought the tying run to the plate with championship dreams hanging in the balance.

That's when reliever Dax Sharp slammed the door shut, recording his first save of the season and sending the Shockers into Saturday's matchup against UAB. For Memphis, the loss ended their season at 24-34 after a respectable 2-2 tournament run.
