Williams Lake Nurse Saves Hockey Player's Life Mid-Game

When Dawson Knackstedt collapsed during a playoff game in March, every second counted. Off-duty nurse Kayla Lucas was watching from the stands when she stepped forward and provided the lifesaving care that kept him stable until paramedics arrived.

The Williams Lake Mustangs player sustained a severe injury during the first period of the March 10 game at the West Fraser Centre in Quesnel following a collision with an opposing player. The game was immediately suspended as Lucas worked to stabilize Knackstedt with help from physiotherapist Tyler Judd, who was supporting the team from the bench.

"In the critical moments that followed, Kayla stepped forward and provided lifesaving care," Judd wrote in his nomination for Lucas's Certificate of Appreciation. Her calm demeanor and quick thinking under immense pressure played a vital role in keeping Knackstedt alive.

Two days after the incident, the Williams Lake Mustangs shared the news everyone was hoping for. Knackstedt had been discharged from the hospital and was heading back to be with his team to begin recovery.

Lucas didn't hesitate when someone needed help, even though she was off duty and watching a game to relax. Her willingness to step up in a terrifying moment shows the power of being prepared and present.

During a city council meeting in August, Lucas received her certificate surrounded by family, friends, and Mustangs staff and players, including Knackstedt himself. The young player took just one week to recover before returning to the ice and is expecting to play this season.

When accepting the award, Lucas remained humble. "The only thanks I needed was that Dawson is here with us tonight," she said to applause from the crowd.

Williams Lake mayor Surinderpal Rathor called Lucas's actions a lesson for everyone about stepping up without hesitation when someone needs immediate help. Knackstedt called the recognition well deserved and said he's looking forward to what should be a great season.

The Williams Lake Mustangs will hold their first home game of the 2026-27 season against the Nelson Leafs on September 25.
